For icons that are used for many tiered items, Istaria supports tintable icons. The icons have a 256 or 512 color palette that range from true red to black. Then, various tints can be applied to produce different colored versions. This is done so the artists only have to make one icon, and the design team can re-use it for multiple items, making a unique icon simply by applying a tint.

I begin by making the outline of the object with 50% grey. I then use the burn and dodge tools, often pixel by pixel, to create the icon. The red is then overlayed on top. The two icons show here are an appetizer dish and a vile of powder.
