Parallel Universe Club

Software: 3ds max, Photoshop
Client: University of Advancing Technology
Size: 8.5 x 5.5 inches
Format: CMYK print

This club was formed by an online student that wanted a way to connect with the resident students at the University. The result was the creation of the Parallel Universe club.

I sketched up the concept of an alien on a planet on his computer connecting to an alien on a space ship on his computer. Since the scene was so geometric, I knew the end result would look better if first done in 3D.

I used Max to model all the elements in the scene. I decided it would be quicker to texture the render in photoshop than to texture all the 3D objects. So I gave objects their flat colors, with some bump and specular maps for lighting purposes. I rendered out a print quality image.

I brought the render into photoshop and added the sky and stars and improved the coloring on the aliens and their equipment. I added in the computer cables via photoshop and the burst of light that they are connected.

The total project took me 4 hours (2.5 in 3D, 1.5 in 2D), not including the render time for the final print quality still.

The image of the aliens went on to become web icons and my coworker made an animation out of it and exported it as a flash web animation.
